Surviving and Thriving: Myca Anderson’s Journey Through Cancer and Adversity
In October 2024, Myca Anderson will celebrate her one-year anniversary with Biologics by McKesson, a milestone that feels both monumental and surreal given her journey to get there. Known as a dedicated member of the Advanced Care Team team, few are aware of the depths of the battles she has faced to stand where she is today.
The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Myca’s story took a dramatic turn in 2016. At the time, she was working at a small mom-and-pop pharmacy, dealing with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Multiple rounds of antibiotics failed to resolve the issue, prompting her doctor to refer her to a gynecologist. It was time for her annual checkup anyway, so she complied without much thought. Little did she know this routine visit would alter the course of her life. During a consultation with a urologist for a bladder stone, Myca received a phone call that would leave her breathless. “You have cervical cancer,” the voice on the other end said. She was at work when she answered that call and remembers the world around her coming to a standstill. By Tuesday, she had her diagnosis; by Thursday, she was in an oncologist’s office; and by Monday, she was undergoing emergency surgery. The speed at which everything happened was dizzying. Her oncologist, from Texas Oncology, informed her that the cancer was at stage 3 but had not yet breached the cervix wall. It was a narrow escape; and had they waited any longer, she would have required extensive chemotherapy and radiation.
Resilience Through Diagnosis
Cancer is a word no one wants to hear, but it’s not just a word—it’s a life-altering diagnosis that impacts the patient and their family. Myca’s son, who was 15 at the time, wept at the thought of losing his mother. Her husband put on a brave face, but fear was evident in his eyes. The emotional toll was enormous, and Myca recalls that it felt like all the air had been sucked out of her lungs.
The Importance of Vigilance
As a cancer survivor, Myca now lives with an increased risk of other cancers, including vaginal and rectal cancer. She undergoes annual PAP smears and mammograms to stay ahead of any potential issues. The importance of these routine checkups cannot be overstated. Had she ignored her recurring UTIs, her cervical cancer might have gone undetected until it was too late.
Myca’s Why
Myca’s experiences have profoundly shaped how she approaches her work at Biologics by McKesson. When a patient thanks her for helping them secure a grant or navigate their treatment, it’s more than just a job well done—it’s deeply personal. She knows what it feels like to be on the receiving end of devastating news, and she strives to give others the hope and support she once needed.
As Myca continues her journey, both personally and professionally, she remains committed to sharing her story in the hope that it will inspire others to prioritize their health and never ignore the signs their bodies are giving them. If her story can help even one person catch their cancer early or seek the help they need in a moment of crisis, then every challenge she has faced will have been worth it. Myca hopes that her story serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is hope and strength to be found.
